How to add a watermark to a PDF

A watermark tells every reader what a document is: a draft not yet approved, a copy for internal use, a sample. This tool lays your text across the pages at the size, angle and opacity you set, on every page or only the ones you choose. Because the watermark is added on your own device, a confidential document is never uploaded to mark it confidential.

  1. Choose a PDF file, or drop a PDF anywhere on this page.
  2. Type the watermark text, then set its opacity, size and angle.
  3. Select Add watermark. The new document is checked, then saved to your device.

Why it is better on your device

  • Private by design. Your files never leave your device. There is no copy on a server to be kept, leaked or deleted later.
  • No waiting. Work starts the moment you choose a file, because there is nothing to upload or download first.
  • Checked before you get it. The new document is opened again and its text is read back. The watermark must appear on every page you chose, and on none of the pages you did not. If the check does not pass, nothing is offered and your original stays exactly as it was.
  • Free, with no account. No sign-up, no watermark added to your work, and it keeps working offline after your first visit.

Good to know

  • Watermarks are text only.
  • A watermark can be removed by anyone with a PDF editor. It labels a document; it does not protect it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a watermark to a PDF?

Choose your PDF, type the watermark text, adjust its opacity, size and angle, and select Add watermark. The marked document is saved to your device.

Can I watermark only certain pages?

Yes. Type the pages to mark, such as 1, 3-5. Leave the field empty to mark every page.

Will the watermark hide the text underneath?

Not if you keep the opacity low. The default of 20% leaves the page fully readable.

Does a watermark stop people from copying a PDF?

No. A watermark labels a document but anyone with a PDF editor can remove it. To stop people opening a file, use Protect PDF.

Is my document uploaded to add the watermark?

No. The watermark is added on your device, so the document never leaves it.
